Professional Experience

  1998 NEON ARTWORK COMMISSIONED by Nancy Bloch and Jerry Nelson, “Connection” , a 6’h x 4’w x 2’d neon light sculpture piece, Brookfield, MD.
  1996 NEON ARTWORK COMMISSIONED by the North Carolina Arts Council, Raleigh, North Carolina. A 6’ x 16’ Neon Artwork: "ASL, Past, Present and Future." Designed and created by the artist, now on permanent display inside the lobby glass windows above the inside entrance of the new building, Student Activities Center, at the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf, Wilson, NC.
  1996 LECTURER, ArtSign ‘96, Louisiana School for the Deaf, 2 Days workshops on De’VIA to secondary students from 5 different state schools for the deaf.
  1995 LECTURER, graduate department during orientation week at Gallaudet University, Washington, DC in September.
  1994 LECTURER: taught a one-semester course on substance abuse and the Deaf community, Counseling Department, Gallaudet University.

  1981 - 1982 DEAF ARTS/ARTISTS COORDINATOR, Beyond Sound, Hollywood, CA. Set up referral system on Deaf artists and actors for the television production company.

  1980 - 1981 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, Deaf Counseling, Advocacy, and Referral Agency, (D.C.A.R.A.) Oakland, CA. Directed and coordinated four-office agency services for Deaf consumers; oversaw planning, policy-making and grant writing components for entire agency; advocate for increased sensitivity to problems faced by the Deaf community via workshops and training.
  1979 - 1980 PUBLIC RELATIONS DIRECTOR, D.C.A.R.A. Supervised the distribution of agency newsletter. Initiated new format and layout, oversaw finished art, editing and cartoons. Developed public service announcements for informational purposes and conducted Deaf Awareness workshops for the general community.
  1979 - 1980 PRODUCER, D.E.A.F. Media, Inc., Oakland, CA. Produced videotapes on signing styles and signing levels of American Sign Language in conjunction with the National Council of Training Programs for Sign Language Instructors.
  1977 - 1979 DIRECTOR OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM, and Board member, SPECTRUM, FOCUS ON DEAF ARTISTS, Austin, TX. Charter member of organization, assisted in developing structure and policies, fundraising, budget planning, and public relations. Directed the Visual and Performing Arts Program for Deaf artists. In conjunction with Antioch University - Southwest Region, taught Deaf and non-deaf undergraduate and graduate students in Arts and Deaf Education (including instructional methods and group processes). Planned, supervised and conducted two (2) summer conferences for visual and performing arts for professional Deaf artists.
  1959 - 1977 ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, Department of Art, Gallaudet University. Taught causes in Drawing, Color, Design, Printmaking, Watercolors, and Graphics, and supervised individual studies in Studio and Art Education.
  1957 - 1959 ILLUSTRATOR, Reuben Donnelly Corporation, Washington, DC. Illustrating ads for the Yellow Pages.

  1989 SEMINAR: ”What is Deaf Art?” Planned, conducted, and participated in a 4-day workshop prior to the Deaf Way Conference with 9 Deaf professional artists and Deaf Art scholars. This resulted in the establishment of Deaf View Image Art (De’VIA), and a written and visual manifesto.
