    Elements of a Culture: Visions by Deaf Artists

  • Seven-city tour of a group art exhibit
  • Curated by Brenda Schertz, a touring group exhibit, formally known as "Elements of a Culture: Visions by Deaf Artists" premiered at the Bank of America Gallery in Seattle from October 7, and will be on view until November 5, 1999. This first touring exhibit featuring works by Deaf artists focusing on the Deaf experience appeared at the Switzer Gallery, at NTID in Rochester, NY February 1-27, 2000, and then traveled to Miami FL, St. Paul MN, Boston MA and Newport KY before closing in San Jose CA in September 2000.

    The Touring Exhibit of Deaf Culture Art is a collection of works by 16 American Deaf artists in a variety of styles and media over the period from 1972 to 1999. Participating artists include: Chuck Baird, Arizona; Irene Bartok, New York; Uzi Buzaglo, Maryland; Susan Dupor, Wisconsin; Paul Johnston, Maryland; Thad C. Martin and Tony Landon McGregor, Texas; Betty G. Miller, Washington DC; Joan Popovich-Kutscher and Orkid Sassouni, California; Ann Silver, Washington State; Marjorie Stout, Michigan; Robin Taylor, New York; Sandi Inches Vasnick, Arizona; Alex Wilhite, North Carolina and Harry R. Williams.

    North Harris College (NHC) called the entire month of September 1999 "Deaf Culture Explosion '99" " and planned many events during the month. The De'VIA Exhibit at NHC Gallery was the kick off event There was a lecture at noon on Sept. 2, and an opening reception and lecture that evening.

  • Conference: "Substance Abuse and the Deaf Community: Knowledge is Power"

  • The Maine Center on Deafness (MCD) and Deaf PAH presented two full-day workshops focused on substance abuse and the deaf community. It was the same workshop both days. Betty G. Miller, author of Deaf and Sober: Journeys through Recovery presented in a "deaf to deaf" workshop (no interpreters provided).

    At the same time, in different rooms, there were similar workshops for interpreters and for hearing service providers. Then, from 3-4 pm, the three groups came together for a wrap-up.

    The Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression and the UVA ASL/Deaf Culture Lecture Series co-hosted an one-woman art show by noted Deaf artist, Betty G. Miller. There was a lecture and reception, invitation only because of space, on Monday, April 26th at 7:30 PM at the TJ Center. Beginning April 27th and ending May 21st, the art exhibit itself was open to everyone.

    Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM and Saturday from 9 AM-2 PM. Admission is free.

    Directions to the TJ Center: From I-64, get off at Exit 124 (Shadwell); get on Rt. 250 West and stay in left lane; go to the "third" left lane exit (look for a white gate "Peter Jefferson Place"); turn left and follow the road and signs to a white house. (Note: If you pass Guaranty Bank on your left and and an Aunt Sarah's Restaurant on your right--you've gone too far).

    In connection with the Deaf Studies VI: Making the Connection conference, there was a two-day opportunity to see a national level Deaf artists exhibit at Oakland's Pro Arts Gallery, April 9-10, 1999. The gallery is at 461 Ninth Street in Oakland, only two blocks from the conference site at the Marriott Hotel.

    The Deaf Artists' Exhibit is curated by Brenda Schertz of Massachusetts.

    The exhibit at the Pro Arts Gallery was open and free to the public Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

    There was a wine & cheese reception on Friday night at 7:00 PM at the ProArts Gallery, hosted by D.E.A.F. Media, Inc.
